Chinese healers first started practicing acupuncture 3,000 years ago. Although it’s been a recognized medical treatment in the East for thousands of years, doctors, researchers, and scientists in the West are only now beginning to understand the true benefits of acupuncture.

Research has shown that acupuncture offers countless benefits for patients, with perks ranging from better sleep to improved breathing.

At Neatz Acupuncture, we’ve always been rooted in science, so we’ve examined some of the latest research to outline the top benefits of acupuncture.

Top 10 Benefits of Acupuncture (And Why You Should Consider It)

Here are some of the biggest research-backed reasons why acupuncture is so beneficial to the human body:

1. Reduces Inflammation & Chronic Pain

Believe it or not, inflammation can actually be good for you. In an ideal scenario, inflammation is the body’s short-lived response to injuries or germs, when the body sends white blood cells to protect itself.

But you can also have chronic inflammation, which is when the body’s natural healing mechanisms refuse to turn off— potentially harming tissues and organs.

Acupuncture is proven to reduce chronic inflammation by boosting macrophages (which play an anti-inflammatory role) throughout the body. As a result, it can even boost your overall skin health.

Another benefit of cutting inflammation: Pain relief.

Pain and inflammation are closely linked, and clients consistently choose acupuncture for pain relief because it is so effective at addressing pain on multiple levels. Proper acupuncture:

  • Stimulates and calms the nervous system, which can have a relaxing effect on the entire body
  • Releases natural painkillers, like endorphins (the same feel-good hormone you get while running, dancing, or eating)
  • Boosts blood circulation (which carries healing white blood cells)

A major 2018 study of nearly 21,000 patients seeking treatment for chronic musculoskeletal pain, osteoarthritis, headaches, and shoulder pain came to a clear conclusion:

“…acupuncture is effective for the treatment of chronic pain, with treatment effects persisting over time.”

So, how long does relief last? Well, that specific study found relief often extends beyond a year. And if pain does return, it’s only at about 15% of its previous strength.

Personal Proof

Here’s something most people don’t know:

I started studying acupuncture because I experienced its benefits first-hand.

There were two reasons I initially explored acupuncture from the client side:

  • An injury made it nearly impossible for me to go up stairs, and western doctors struggled to provide any sort of meaningful relief.
  • I experienced excruciating periods that were more painful than they should have been.

Amazingly, acupuncture provided relief from both issues—as if the pain was never there.

That was the day I decided to study acupuncture!

2. Boosts Women’s Health

Thanks to acupuncture’s ability to reduce inflammation, trigger endorphins, and improve pelvic blood flow, it’s a powerful, research-backed alternative to managing cramps, PMS, and other period-related issues with over-the-counter painkillers (like ibuprofen and acetaminophen), rest, or warm compresses.

Studies have shown acupuncture to be effective at treating:

  • Menstrual Cycle – Acupuncture is proven to benefit women with dysmenorrhea—painful cramps and difficult flow—with pain reduction often lasting 6–12 months.
  • Pregnancy Discomfort – A 2002 study of nearly 600 pregnant women found traditional acupuncture can reduce nausea and dry retching early in a pregnancy.
  • Hormones – Multiple studies have shown acupuncture boosts estrogen, progesterone, prolactin, and other hormones important for overall women’s health and function.

3. Enhances Complexion

Time and time again, facial acupuncture has been shown to boost skin health while reducing symptoms like:

  • puffiness
  • wrinkles
  • enlarged pores
  • sunspots
  • facial asymmetry

As proof, here’s a real-world facial acupuncture before and after case study featuring one of our own clients:

Facial Acupuncture Before And After

The scientific research around facial acupuncture is equally exciting. One small study found facial acupuncture could reduce the size of your jaw muscle by up to 13.4%—all by shrinking the inflammation.

4. Postoperative Recovery

More and more medical professionals are turning to acupuncture as a post-operative tool for reducing pain and speeding up recovery.

A small study published in 2025 found combining acupuncture and massage as part of post-operative recovery:

  • Reduced average hospital stays by a full day.
  • Reduced joint stiffness (Only 3.6% of individuals receiving acupuncture and massage suffered from stiffness, compared to 16.7% of the others.)
  • Reduced chronic pain (7.1% vs 22.2%)
  • Lower levels of anxiety and depression one month post-surgery

Additional studies have found similar results. Acupuncture:

  • Reduces pain
  • Reduces the need for opioids
  • Reduces unwanted side effects of anesthesia (like nausea)

Another reason hospitals, surgeons, and doctors are recommending acupuncture more than ever: It’s low-risk.

With limited side effects and plenty of benefits, adding acupuncture to a recovery regimen is a no-brainer!

5. Enhances Respiratory Function

Believe it or not, acupuncture can even help you breathe. Studies have shown acupuncture can alleviate symptoms of chronic respiratory diseases, including:

  • Asthma
  • COPD
  • Lung Cancer

So, how does it work?

When properly administered, acupuncture relaxes chest and diaphragm muscles while simultaneously reducing inflammation in the airways.

As a result, you’ll have an easier time breathing—and more air can reach your lungs.

6. Treats Old Injuries

Some injuries never seem to fully heal, and that makes them a great candidate for acupuncture.

These old injuries often leave behind scar tissue, muscle tension, and altered movement patterns that continue to irritate the surrounding tissues, and acupuncture helps by:

  • Increasing blood flow to damaged tissues
  • Relaxing tight muscles and fascia
  • Reducing chronic inflammation
  • Calming irritated nerves
  • Encouraging the body’s natural healing response

While every case is different, acupuncture often helps people regain mobility, reduce discomfort, and get back to activities they thought they’d have to live without.

7. Alleviates Headaches

Acupuncture can significantly reduce both the frequency and intensity of tension headaches and migraines. In many cases, patients also require fewer pain medications after beginning treatment.

Acupuncture helps by:

  • Relaxing tight muscles in the neck, shoulders, and jaw
  • Improving blood circulation
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Calming an overactive nervous system
  • Releasing natural pain-relieving endorphins

Because headaches often stem from multiple contributing factors—including stress, muscle tension, poor posture, and inflammation—acupuncture takes a whole-body approach rather than simply masking symptoms.

Here’s what some of the research says about acupuncture and migraines. Acupuncture can:

  • Reduce the duration of migraines.
  • Reduce the frequency of migraines.
  • Provide equal relief as conventional drug therapy, like topiramate.

8. Alleviates Depression & Anxiety

Acupuncture is an incredible stress-reducer, and it’s been proven to assist in mental health issues. A few examples:

When combined with traditional therapy and professional mental health support, acupuncture can provide incredible, non-prescription support on your wellness journey.

9. Sleep

Acupuncture is so beneficial for sleep, it’s even been studied to treat insomnia.

A 2024 study published in Sleep Medicine Reviews found acupuncture benefited individuals suffering from insomnia by:

  • Improving sleep quantity
  • Improving sleep quality
  • Normalizing the sleep schedule
  • Reducing insomnia symptoms, like depression, anxiety, fatigue, and cognitive impairments

In my experience, it’s often good for sleep right away. In fact, I always tell my clients the same thing:

Acupuncture should be the best nap of your life. If I don’t put you to sleep on my table, I did something wrong.

10. Digestion

Remember when I said acupuncture calms the nervous system?

That has major benefits for the digestive system, especially when you factor in acupuncture’s blood flow-boosting capabilities.

Research from 2002 found:

  • Acupuncture can reduce nausea (as we mentioned previously).
  • Acupuncture can “normalize” stomach function and speed.
  • Acupuncture may provide relief for irritable bowel syndrome, especially with abdominal pain.

More recent research shows acupuncture is effective at:

  • Providing relief from ulcers by reducing acid output.
  • Enhancing digestion and immunity by repairing the GI barrier.
